Tom, Andrew, Ashley and I are off on our third annual backpacking hike. This time we are hitting up Yellowstone National Park, and intend to hike a 35km loop around the Shoshone Geyser Basin and Shoshone Lake.
A couple dozen pounds of gear.
Prepping for the hike has gotten easier with each trip. We dedicated a shelf in our linen closet to our tent, travel towels, camelbacks, water filter, ThermaRests, headlamps, and other miscellaneous gear. I basically just raid the closet and pile it on the floor.
Three days worth of dehydrated backpacking food.
Now that we have tried various kinds of camping food, we have narrowed down the items that are most convenient and tasty. We had a couple loser meals last year, but this year, we know what we like! Our upcoming menu includes-- Pad Thai, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice, Buffalo Chicken Wraps, Mac and Cheese, a side of peas and carrots and a dehydrated package of S'Mores.
Trail snacks for four.
It's amazing how much energy you burn on the trail, so we learned early the importance of trail snacks. We usually have one longer break in the morning and one in the afternoon where we'll dig into granola bars, energy chews, trail mix or fruit leathers. My favorite part of the trip is shopping for the trail snacks!
Andrew, Ashley, Tom and I.
You will see more of the enthusiastic faces in posts to come. We hope good weather, plenty of wildlife sightings, but no close encounters with bears.
Now I'm gonna go see 'bout some geysers!
